Particle Size Grades

Select Your Grade

Vermiculite is graded by expanded particle size. Finer grades are preferred for horticulture and insulation plaster; coarser grades for loose-fill insulation, construction aggregates, and packaging. All grades available in both golden and silver color variants.

Lightweight — Bulk Density 60–160 kg/m³

Expanded vermiculite is one of the lightest mineral products available — dramatically reducing structural loads in construction and shipping costs compared to conventional aggregates.

Excellent Water & Nutrient Retention

Accordion-layered structure absorbs and holds water and dissolved nutrients, releasing them gradually to plant roots. Critical for potting mixes, hydroponics, and propagation media.

Non-Combustible up to 1,150 °C

Vermiculite is inherently fireproof with a melting point above 1,300 °C. Widely specified in fire-rated building systems, passive fire protection, and high-temperature industrial insulation.

Asbestos-Free Certified

All Miningsun vermiculite is sourced from deposits independently tested and certified free from asbestiform minerals. Test certificates available on request for every lot.

pH Neutral, Sterile & Non-Toxic

Natural pH 6.5–7.5, sterile (no weed seeds or pathogens), chemically inert, and non-toxic. Fully compatible with organic farming standards and food-contact applications.

Flexible Packaging for Retail or Bulk

Available in 10 L / 100 L retail bags, 25 kg PP bags, 1 MT / 1.5 MT jumbo bags, or loose in containers. Custom bag printing and private-label packaging available.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between golden and silver vermiculite?
The color difference comes from the mineral deposit origin. Golden vermiculite (from Inner Mongolia and Hebei) has a warm golden-bronze color and slightly higher iron content. Silver vermiculite (from Xinjiang) has a lighter silver-grey appearance with slightly higher magnesium content. Both are chemically and physically equivalent in performance — the choice is often driven by aesthetic preference (particularly for retail horticultural products) or regional availability. We supply both; specify your preferred color when ordering.
How do I choose the right grade for my application?
Grade 1 (0–1 mm) and Grade 2 (1–3 mm) are the standard horticultural grades — Grade 2 is the most widely used globally for potting mixes, propagation, and hydroponics. Grade 3 (3–6 mm) is preferred for loose-fill insulation in construction and coarser horticultural blends. Grade 4–5 (6–12 mm) is used for industrial loose-fill insulation, hazardous goods packaging, and high-temperature refractory applications. If you are unsure, we recommend requesting a sample of Grade 2 and Grade 3 for your specific application test.
Is your vermiculite certified asbestos-free?
Yes. All Miningsun vermiculite is sourced from deposits that have been independently tested for asbestiform minerals including tremolite, actinolite, and chrysotile. An asbestos-free certificate is issued with every shipment as standard. This is a requirement in most markets and is particularly important for horticultural and construction products subject to EU REACH and similar regulations. We can provide the test certificates for your review prior to placing an order.
Can vermiculite be used as a standalone growing medium?
Vermiculite can be used as a standalone growing medium for seed germination and cuttings propagation, where its moisture retention and sterility are ideal. However, for mature plant growing it is typically blended with peat, coco coir, or perlite at 25–50% by volume to balance water retention with drainage and aeration. Pure vermiculite retains too much water for most mature plants and can become compacted over time. Grade 2 is the recommended grade for all horticultural blending.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for vermiculite?
MOQ is 1 metric ton for bagged orders (25 kg bags, 100 L bags, or jumbo bags). A standard 20ft container holds approximately 18–22 MT of bagged vermiculite depending on grade and packaging format. For retail distributors requiring mixed grades or private-label packaging, we recommend a minimum of one full container per grade to keep unit costs competitive. Contact us to discuss your specific requirements and we will provide a tailored quote.
