Vermiculite size grades and applications
Expanded vermiculite is selected by particle size, bulk density and end use. Crude ore is a separate form with a different customs heading and much lower shipping volume than expanded material.
Fine Expanded Vermiculite (Grade 1–2, 0–3 mm)
Bulk density 120–160 kg/m³. Fine exfoliated flakes for horticulture and growing media, spray-applied fireproofing plaster, coatings, gypsum board and lightweight filler. Water absorption: 250–350%.
Medium Expanded Vermiculite (Grade 3, 3–6 mm)
Bulk density 90–130 kg/m³. The general-purpose grade for loose-fill insulation, lightweight concrete and screeds, packing and horticulture.
Coarse Expanded Vermiculite (Grade 4–5, 6–12 mm)
Bulk density 60–100 kg/m³. Coarse low-density flakes for cavity and roof insulation, high-temperature or refractory backup insulation to 1,150 °C and industrial packaging.
Crude (Unexpanded) Vermiculite Ore
Raw vermiculite concentrate for buyers who exfoliate on site, supplied from superfine to premium flake grade. Crude vermiculite uses HS 2530.10; expanded vermiculite uses HS 6806.20, so state the form on the purchase order.
| Grade | Particle size | Bulk density | Typical selection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fine Grade 1–2 | 0–3 mm | 120–160 kg/m³ | Horticulture, plaster and board systems |
| Medium Grade 3 | 3–6 mm | 90–130 kg/m³ | Insulation, lightweight concrete and packing |
| Coarse Grade 4–5 | 6–12 mm | 60–100 kg/m³ | Low-density insulation and refractory backup |
| Crude ore | By flake grade | Confirmed by lot | On-site exfoliation |
