Fly ash classes and low-LOI selection
Class, loss on ignition and fineness should be fixed before price comparison. Per-batch LOI matters because excess unburned carbon can disrupt air entrainment and increase mix variability.
Class F Fly Ash (ASTM C618, low calcium)
SiO2 + Al2O3 + Fe2O3 ≥ 70%, CaO ≤ 8%, LOI ≤ 5%, fineness retained on 45 µm ≤ 20% and strength activity index ≥ 80%. The durability grade for sulfate resistance, ASR mitigation, mass concrete and marine work.
Class C Fly Ash (ASTM C618, high calcium)
SiO2 + Al2O3 + Fe2O3 ≥ 50%, CaO 15–30%, LOI ≤ 5% and SO3 ≤ 5%. A self-cementing option from sub-bituminous or lignite coal where faster setting and higher early strength matter more than maximum sulfate resistance.
| Class | SiO2 + Al2O3 + Fe2O3 | CaO | LOI | Typical selection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class F | ≥ 70% | ≤ 8% | ≤ 5% | Durability, mass concrete and marine work |
| Class C | ≥ 50% | 15–30% | ≤ 5% | Earlier strength and self-cementing behavior |
