Bentonite grades by application
“Bentonite” is not a complete purchase specification. State sodium or calcium type, application grade, mesh and the performance lines that matter for drilling, civil sealing or foundry use.
API 13A Drilling-Grade Sodium Bentonite
Montmorillonite ≥ 75%, yield ≥ 90 bbl/ton, fluid loss ≤ 15 mL/30 min, viscometer at 600 rpm ≥ 30 cp, moisture ≤ 10% and 200 mesh. For oil and water-well drilling fluids and HDD.
OCMA-Grade Bentonite
Montmorillonite ≥ 65%, yield ≥ 70 bbl/ton, fluid loss ≤ 22.5 mL and viscometer reading ≥ 25 cp. An economical drilling grade for less demanding fluid programs.
Civil / GCL-Grade Bentonite
Montmorillonite ≥ 70%, free swelling index ≥ 24 mL/2 g and 60–200 mesh. For geosynthetic clay liners, slurry walls, waterproofing and civil sealing where swelling and low permeability matter.
Foundry-Grade Bentonite
Montmorillonite ≥ 70%, sand ≤ 3.0%, moisture ≤ 10% and 100–200 mesh. Green-sand casting bond clay selected for wet/dry compression strength and thermal stability.
